In May 2021, the world lost musician, producer, composer and bandleader, Nick Page, aka Count Dubulah. Having worked on 200 plus albums and singles during his illustrious career, Nick Page was also working on a new collection of songs in his last few months. These last recordings of Nick Page with Dub Colossus, the project Nick founded in 2008, is being released through Real World X today as a special album from one of the founding fathers of the dub global music scene.

Dub Will Keep Us Together was co-produced by Nick Page, Toby Mills and Nick’s life partner, Cristina Moran aka Dubulette.  It reflects on collective understanding as a resistance to the global forces shaping our societies, — a shared struggle for justice, bound together by love. Themes of unification, diversity and cultural inclusivity permeate the album’s vocals and timeless rhythms.

Original singers and musical heavyweights from Nick’s collective Dub Colossus feature on Dub Will Keep Up Together such as the incredible Ethiopian vocalist Mimi Zenebe, London saxophonist and flautist, Ben Somers, and British ground-breaking percussionist, Paul Chivers.

Great musical friends join bassist and percussionist Toby Mills and Nick Page on Dub Will Keep Us Together. These include global fusion giants Transglobal Underground’s Tim Whelan on keyboards, Hamid Mantu on drums.

Guest vocalist spots including leading London Latino vocalist Holly Holden, George Riley, Mykaell Riley and Amara & Ollie Mills. Dubulette also features as a guest vocalist and as co-producer with Nick Page and Toby Mills, says this of the project: “This is an eclectic album with some new members alongside some of the old ones. Mimi from Ethiopia is back, and like her country, it’s a compendium of different rhythms and influences, showing the path the band has taken since its beginnings in 2008. Dub Will Keep Us Together talks of the understanding of the collective as the counteraction to international events which are shaping our societies and minds, a fight for justice. When Nick Page, the visionary behind Dub Colossus, passed in 2021, he left an unfinished album, which a group of collaborators has now completed. It is both a celebration and a continuation of Nick’s work.

This is an eclectic album with some new members alongside some of the old ones. Mimi from Ethiopia is back, and like her country, the album is a compendium of different rhythms and influences, showing the path the band has taken since its beginnings in 2008: reggae and dub meets Ethio-jazz, soul and funk.

Dub Will Keep Us Together talks of the understanding of the collective as the counteraction to international events which are shaping our societies and minds, a fight for justice. A fight Nick very much believed in.

Many of these songs saw a very limited release on Bandcamp (they were only available for 24 hours each), and we were planning on reworking them for a new album – originally planned for release late 2021.

A tribute concert to Nick in November 2021 was the catalyst for a decision to complete this album based around the musicians who played that show. We reworked those songs, plus one that was at embryonic stage with the aim of releasing on vinyl. That vinyl will now be available via Bandcamp on 6th March this year, and Real World X are releasing the album digitally the same day.

Now we are thrilled and excited, the help, love and contributions of friends, collaborators, people who knew Nick, fans has been ecstatic. We thank you all!

It’s with great sadness we announce that Nick passed away peacefully on the morning of 11th May 2021 in London with his family around him following a long illness.

Our deepest condolences go to his wife Cristina, his sister Boo, brother in law Myles and their two boys Oscar and Archie, to his mum Billie, his dad David, his stepmum Jane, his cousin Jimi and his partner Lucinda, to all Nick’s extended family in the UK and Greece and to his many friends all over the world. May he rest in peace.

Dub Colossus first made an appearance in 2008. Released on Real World Records, A Town Called Addis was inspired by meeting, writing and working with Ethiopian singers and musicians in Addis Ababa in August 2006. The collaboration between Dub Colossus and these amazing musicians covers Azmari and traditional styles as well as the popular singing styles of the 60s and 70s.
The follow up, Addis Through The Looking Glass, was released on Real World Records in 2011. A more varied and sophisticated album that moved the music on – with the Ethiopian contingent playing a greater role in the proceedings. It’s still an experimental fusion set, not a straightforward recording of Ethiopian songs, but the successes of the previous two years of touring led to growing trust and confidence in the band.
2012 saw another change of tack, with the release of ‘Dub Me Tender Vols 1&2’, also on Real World Records: A dub-heavy album, reworking some existing Dub Colossus album tracks alongside new material. This album subsequently went on to win a Songlines Music Award for ‘best cross cultural collaboration’.
2014’s Addis To Omega is more of a UK/Jamaican affair, reflecting the times and events happening locally and globally, the impact they are having on us all…social, political and economic. Musically, this is the spirit of the Specials seen through a Funkadelic lens, with a sprinkling of psychedelic dub on Forbidden Planet (DUBADELICA)
While experimenting with different live band formats, the Dub Colossus Soundsystem was born, and saw the band reworking some of the earlier tracks and mixing them up with newer material. This show always got a great reaction, hence the decision to release some of the versions that were played live in this format. In 2018, after a hiatus for a couple of years, the band has decided to both move on and explore its roots with the formation of another new line up, which incorporates the Ethiopian singing of Mimi Zenebe, one of the original members who sang on the opening number of the first album, with more London centric sounds of jazz and dub, which can be heard on the new tracks.

This EP is available digitally via Real World Records, and all the usual digital platforms.
